Projects

If you are still in your final year or final semester of your MBA program, do not leave until the end of your graduation to start thinking about your job search strategy.

If you are graduating from a college that does not offer internship opportunities, you might want to consider pursuing projects either part of your degree requirements or through freelancing or even just as you learn new skills.

If you have the opportunity to work on projects, either as an individual or as a group of students, we think these projects maybe great opportunities to learn new skills and demonstrate a variety of technical and soft skills to demonstrate to your potential employers you are worth calling for an interview.

Do not just work on stereotypical projects that everyone works on in college.

1. Analyse publicly available data to determine correlation between population growth and new job opportunities

2. Analyse past 10 year cricketer performance data and evaluate correlation between IPL auction price and performance levels

3. Determine correlation between market news (Example election announcements, new finance policies, etc. ) and the stock price

4. The evolution of edTech companies in India and their performance levels vs opportunities

5. A catalogue of companies offering internships in India (this can be a great resource for your college if you manage to pull it off) 6. Tweet sentiment analysis and correlation between two not seemingly related events (Example - Masterchef new episode announcement and the number of new cooking channels started in YouTube)

Your projects are the best opportunities you have to showcase to your employers that you possess some valuable skills. Use those project opportunities well and stand out from the competition.

Interests/Hobbies

You can choose to include your volunteering activities instead of hobbies, if you are not too comfortable listing hobbies.

How to create new opportunities and find a job

It is not uncommon to come across new graduates who say they graduated 4 years ago but still have not found a job.

While it is unfortunate, it is also something that can be easily fixed if the job seekers follow these simple guidelines - all from our experiences of working with fresh college graduates and helping them find their first job opportunities.

1. Do not box yourself
We see often that graduates box themselves in within their areas of specialisation. Be it Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering, be open to exploring opportunities across functional areas and disciplines. Your careers will last a long time, easily 40 years or so, and so there is no point in boxing yourself to look for opportunities within your area of speclization. The more open you are to explore opportunities in areas other than your core areas, the faster you will find your first opportunity.

2. Leverage Internships and Volunteering
Internships and volunteering are powerful avenues to gain practical experience, build a network, and enhance your resume. Many employers value real-world experience, and internships allow you to showcase your skills in a professional setting. Even if the internship is unpaid, the knowledge and connections you gain can significantly boost your chances of landing a full-time job. Additionally, volunteering in your field of interest not only demonstrates your commitment but also expands your network and provides valuable insights.

3. Networking with those who have networks
Building a strong professional network is crucial in today's job market. Attend industry events, career fairs, and networking functions to connect with professionals in your field. Utilize platforms like LinkedIn to create a compelling profile and join relevant groups. Actively engage in conversations, seek informational interviews, and don't hesitate to reach out to alumni or professionals for guidance. Many job opportunities arise through referrals and networking, so invest time in fostering meaningful connections.

One of the easiest ways to network is meeting new people in conferences. There are conferences happening all the time in nearly all cities and towns. You can easily find out where the conferences are happening from a simple google search. Most conferences entry free of cost to students and recent graduates. You can also offer to work for free with the conference organizers so you get to attend the conference for free. There are so many ways you can gain entry to a paid conference by offering to associate yourself with the conference organizers and offer some value in return.

Additionally, you can also host meet up events for a particular skill or offer assistance to someone who is hosting a meet up event in an area that interests you. You will be able to meet people in attendance who may be able to offer you endless networking opportunities.

It is a big mistake not to tailor your resume to each job you are applying to

4. Customize Your Application Materials
Avoid using generic resumes and cover letters. Tailor your application materials for each job you apply to, emphasizing the skills and experiences relevant to the specific role. A customized application demonstrates your genuine interest in the position and helps you stand out from the competition. Showcase your achievements, projects, and any unique skills that align with the job requirements. Employers appreciate candidates who take the time to personalize their applications.

5. Upskill and Stay Informed
The job market is dynamic, with evolving requirements and technologies. Stay proactive by continuously upskilling and staying informed about industry trends. Identify the skills in demand within your chosen field and invest time in acquiring them. Online courses, certifications, and workshops are excellent ways to enhance your skill set. Demonstrating a commitment to ongoing learning makes you a more attractive candidate to employers.

Do not let your job searching become a full time job. Do not "just" pass time. Focus on learning a new skill EVERY SINGLE DAY"

We have seen countless number of fresh graduates who dedicate their entire time to job searching. While it is commendable that they are super focused on the job search, it just leaves them with too little to show for the time they spent after graduation. Even if it is blogging about your favourite movie or a software your learning, it still gives you something to talk about in your interview as how you have been developing yourself in the time since you graduated.

Try writing a new blog and work on increasing visitors to your blog site, and we are sure you already have two very important technical skills to boast about in your interviews.

6. Seek Guidance and Feedback
Don't hesitate to seek guidance from mentors, career advisors, or professionals in your industry. They can provide valuable insights, review your application materials, and offer constructive feedback. Take advantage of career counseling services offered by colleges, universities, or online platforms. Honest feedback can help you refine your approach and make necessary improvements in your job search strategy.

7. Be Persistent and Resilient
Job searching can be challenging, and rejection is a part of the process. Be persistent, stay resilient, and learn from each experience. Use rejection as an opportunity for self-reflection and improvement. Keep refining your approach based on the feedback you receive. Success often comes to those who persevere and adapt to challenges.

In conclusion, finding job opportunities requires a proactive and multifaceted approach. By avoiding self-imposed limitations, leveraging internships and volunteering, networking effectively, customizing application materials, staying informed, seeking guidance, and maintaining persistence, you increase your chances of securing a fulfilling job. Remember, the journey may have its ups and downs, but each step contributes to your growth and readiness for the right opportunity.
